Disease-detecting tool could be in livestock producers’ hands by next year

A hand-held device capable of quickly identifying livestock diseases could be in the hands of Ontario producers next year, according to one of the instrument’s creators. “We’ve been negotiating with some manufacturing companies who are major players in this area,” Suresh Neethirajan, a University of Guelph engineering professor and director of the school’s BioNano Laboratory, told Farms.com. “Hopefully in a year or so farmers can see the product available.”...

WATERLOO REGION - Our farmers are Ontario's youngest. They work some of Ontario's smallest farms without an abundance of technology. Yet they earn more than most farmers, generating $564 million in annual revenues. PETROLIA - It’s cold, it’s wet, and it’s slow, but the 2017 planting season is crawling towards the finish line. Many Western Ontario growers had all of their corn in by May 31, but not soybeans. Some growers had zero beans in the ground. Farmers don’t start losing significant yield unless they plant after June 15....
