Ontario’s new rules for AZ licensing get mixed review from farm country

CAMPBELLFORD - Ontario overhauled the rules for getting an AZ license in July, a move that some farmers, elevator operators and truckers feel threatens to make an unpopular job even less popular. The province announced the move after a Toronto Star investigation revealed dozens of what it called “degree mills,” unaccredited colleges that cranked out diplomas, teaching truck drivers how to pass a road test and little else. The new requirements stipulate budding truckers using air brakes will need at least 103.5 hours of road time before they can even take a test....

WESTERN ONTARIO: International Plowing Match brings in record number of competitors for 100th anniversary

WALTON - The International Plowing match marked its 100th year in 2013 and again this year in Huron County. The IPM began in 1913 but skipped five years, included four during the Second World War, leaving organizers with two dates to celebrate. Eleven area landowners hosted the 1,000-acre spectacle that included about 500 exhibitors and vendors. This year’s match, held from Sept. 19 - 23, was interrupted on the first day by a sudden storm that erupted when the visiting politicians were due to speak, leading organizers to cancel the second day to allow the muddy streets to dry....
