WESTERN ONTARIO: Beef Cattle Research Centre breaking ground this fall

GUELPH - Ground is expected to break this fall on a new $15.5 million Beef Cattle Research Centre at the University of Guelph’s Elora agricultural research complex after the provincial government announced $12.4 million for the construction.

The federal government is giving $2 million with the rest of the money coming from beef farmers’ check-off fees.

The facility, expected to be completed in 2018, will be used to study beef quality, genetics, forage productivity, food safety and animal health and welfare.

Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada says research at the new facility is expected to have a direct benefit for producers by reducing the amount of feed needed for every pound of beef, with each cow producing less methane and less manure.

Industry research shows feed costs account for 25 per cent of beef input costs.

There are 17,400 beef farms in Ontario representing farm gate sales revenue of $1.3 billion, processing revenue of $3.3 billion and retail sales of $8.9 billion annually.
