Cash Crop
In Ontario many commodities are farmed as cash crops, including wheat, barley, mixed grains, soy and other beans and corn.
The Canadian Wheat Board, which markets 20 percent of the world’s wheat and barley, plays a major role in the marketing of Canadian farm products.
Some regions in Ontario are very suitable for growing potatoes. In fact, potatos are Ontario’s largest fresh vegetable crop and second only to tomatos as a processing crop. In any one year, an average of 43,000 acres are grown, with a farm gate value of some $80 million.
Many potato farmers have contracts with large food processing companies such as McCain’s for french fries, chips and other products. In Ontario, potato marketing is done through the Ontario Potato Board.
